I found one article in the Liahona this month of particular importance the day after Fast Sunday. The article is called “Relief Through Jesus Christ: The Power of the Fast” by Sister Kristin M. Yee, Second Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency.

The point that really hit me was where she said:

Fasting is connected to sacrifice, and sacrifice is symbolic of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and His Atonement. We have the opportunity to reverently consider His sacrifice as we seek inspiration to know what to fast for and what to fast from.

This tells me that the whole point of the fast is to remember the sacrifice of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

We consider what to fast for and what to fast from – or in other words, what to sacrifice. But the whole point is to remember Jesus Christ and what he did for us and why and that we can always turn to him, no matter what, repent and become more like Him.
